The Company

Candoco Dance was formed in 1991 by Celeste Dandeker and Adam Benjamin and became the first organisation in the UK to integrate disabled and non-disabled members in contemporary dance. Candoco’s extensive Learning and Development projects are just as important as its dance projects, which has led to Candodo being well known as the World’s leading exponent of inclusive dance practice.

Since then, a high demand for contemporary dance for the disabled paved the way for Candoco’s Foundation Course in Dance for Disabled Students, which began in September 2004 and ran for three years. It was the first of its kind in the UK. Other Learning and Development projects and activities have continued to develop apace and Candoco now work with over 12,000 people each year.

The Dance

Candoco return to the Drill Hall to celebrate its 20th anniversary with three bold and unexpected commissions. They will begin by revisiting Set and Reset/ Reset, Trisha Brown’s signature work from 1983, featuring music by Laurie Anderson and designs by Robert Rauschenberg before performing striking new works by French artist Rachid Ouramdane and Matthias Sperling. Rachid intertwines strong visuals and striking costumes with unforgettable soundscapes to create an atmospheric piece. Drawing on the performers’ pasts, he reveals portraits of life to create poetic, often dark and ultimately compassionate dance work. Finally, in a first for Candoco, Matthias Sperling, captures the uniqueness of one dancer in a lighthearted solo. This intimate encounter allows the audience to reflect and focus on every movement detail and to indulge in the feeling it evokes.
