Lincoln Book Festival: David Starkey – The Tudor Myth

Arms and the Mind: the Victory of Bosworth and the Invention of a Dynasty

Share:

Bosworth Field, when Richard III was killed and the rebel earl of Richmond crowned Henry VII on the battlefield with the circlet taken from the vanquished Richard's helmet, is one of the most famous and important battles of English history. But it was also - which is much less well understood - a notable victory in a propaganda war.

Churchill famously remarked that he was confident of the verdict of history since he would write it. Much the same could have been said of Henry VII and his agents who - like Churchill - thought how victory would be presented before it was even won. The 'Lancastrian' badge of the Red Rose was invented and used at Bosworth so that the battle would be seen as the culmination of a struggle between two equal sides; while the reconciling role of Henry's marriage to Elizabeth of York, to which he had been committed for over eighteen months, had already been explained to the pope who was primed to issue the necessary dispensation.

In short, the Tudor myth had been devised before the Tudors were even on the throne. Which is an important reason they retained it - often against the odds.
